Activity: Copycat: One person leaves the room and the group selects a leader. The group stands in a circle and the one who has left the room stands in the middle of the circle. The leader performs an action and the rest of the group follows. The goal is for the person in the middle to be unable to identify the leader. They get three guesses.
-What do you think of when you hear the word Discipleship?
-What is a disciple? (One who follows closely to another)
-Who were “the disciples”? (Blind Followers)
-What kind of people were they? (Screw Ups, Not Good enoughs)
-We often have elevated views of everyone and everything in this book. One of the best quotes that I’ve heard is from my mentor in Kentucky. “These people are people like you and me, they just happened to be around when the Bible got wrote.” Nice grammar eh? These people are not special, as a matter of fact they are anything but “special” in comparison with others in their culture. That’s what made Jesus’ relationship with them so special. And that’s why the lessons Jesus taught them are so applicable to us.
Nooma Video: Dust “May You Be Covered in the Dust of your Rabbi.” 15:31
-Why were the disciples so eager to drop their nets and follow Jesus?
-You can do what I do. Of course they drop their nets.
-Jesus chose those that weren’t good enough by the standards of the world…the religious of the day. The JV team, the not good enoughs.
-What message was Jesus sending to us by not choosing the best of the best?
1 Corinthians 1:26-29: “Brothers and Sisters, think of what you were when you were called.”
Small Group Discussion:
-Have you ever thought about Jesus as your Rabbi? Why or why not?
-Would you consider yourself a disciple? Why or why not?
-Why did Peter ask Jesus to tell him to come out to him? (He wanted to do what the Rabbi did…wanted to follow him).
Rob Says, “Now I always assumed that Peter doubts Jesus. But Jesus isn’t sinking.”
-Who does Peter doubt? (He doubts himself) Rob Says, “He loses faith in himself that he can actually be like his rabbi.”
-How big of a role do your insecurities play in your life?
-Do they affect your faith?
-In what way is Jesus saying to you “You can do what I do”?
-How is the way you view your walk with God changed in light of Jesus saying “you can do what I do…or else I wouldn’t have called you”.
Read this Blessing and Close in prayer: May you believe in God. But may you come to see that God believes in you. May you have faith in Jesus. But may you come to see that Jesus has faith that you can be like him. A person of forgiveness, and peace, and grace, and joy, and hope. And may you be covered in the dust of your rabbi, Jesus.
